Things to do
Kailua-Kona is an old historic town that is filled with shops and diverse eating and entertainment choices. We are located on Alii Drive, about 2.5 miles from the downtown area. This beautiful coastal road is bordered by stately old tropical trees including Royal Poinciana, Banyan, Coconut Palms and Bougainvillea. I like to ride my bicycle into town each morning for coffee.
Then, there are the beaches! One mile south is Magic Sands Beach, a white sandy beautiful location that is just plain fun. Gentle waves wash in here and lots of folks like to Boogie Board the surf. Did I mention that there are two boards in the closet off our lanai? Some snorkel gear there as well.
Another mile south is one of the best snorkeling areas on the Island, Kahalu'u Beach Park. Here there are lots of colorful tropical fish, as well as turtles. The further from shore, the clearer the water and more spectacular the coral formations. This is a must do.
The Island is big, allow 2.5 hours to drive to Hilo, the county seat, and second largest city in the state. Going the south route, you will pass South Point, the southernmost point in the U.S. Punalu'u Black Sand Beach Park with all of the resting turtles is also a must see, as is Volcano National Park.
North of Kona, beyond the airport, are a variety of white sand beaches. A-Bay, 69 Beach, Hapuna, and Spencer Beach are just a few. A good guide book will be very helpful in exploring all the hidden areas. There are golf courses everywhere, and the ones at the high end hotels are world class.
Waimea, on the North route to Hilo is the home of the largest operating cattle ranch in the U.S., The Parker Ranch. This is another beautiful historic area that is at a cooler 3,000 foot elevation.
